We have developed an education tool that will address the needs, disadvantage and create the opportunities for those that need it. In order to deliver this tool we have developed a structured workshop suitable for children, young adults, older adults and organisations. Given the recent high profile news stories particularly concerning the abuse and violence of children we would like to deliver this workshop to as many children and young people as possible within the Birmingham area. The award of this grant would enable us to do this and at the same time help raise awareness as participants will share the knowledge gained at the workshops amongst their families and friends.

Having personally suffered domestic violence and sexual abuse from the age of 6, I have first-hand experience of the loneliness and cultural restraints that caused me to suffer in silence. Being from a Sikh background I was made to hide my bruises, threatened to keep quiet and led to believe that this was a normal part of our culture. At no time was I approached by any adults, teachers or even school friends to discuss why I was so disruptive, sullen and angry! If they had known the warning signs, I could have been helped at a much younger age. It took over 20 years for me to see the truth and to break the silence. As a survivor of this abuse I have been counselling and speaking to women of all backgrounds for the last 8 years, many of whom have been victims of domestic abuse since they were children. I support them on a regular basis as many don’t realise the help and support that is out there or they are unable to admit that they are being abused. From the conversations with them and the way society is now, I have realised that the situation has steadily got worse and that is why ‘Breaking the Silence’ will be a way to highlight the torment some children and women are going through.

I have spoken to thousands of women at different events throughout the UK and am regularly approached or

contacted by at least 25% of those affected by this issue. Often I am contacted on Facebook by those who are too scared to speak to me face to face due to shame or through fear of reprisals within the community.

The aim of ‘Breaking the Silence’ Workshops is to help those who are caught up in the culture and tradition of

domestic abuse, forced marriages and human trafficking. There is reported evidence of countless people subjected to abuse in ignorance that the behaviours inflicted are not normal. Programmes delivered to local communities will show the impact of what is going on behind closed doors and lead to empowerment for change with the utilisation of effective tools and support. Our aim is for the community to not sit and suffer in silence, but to speak, challenge and act on information they are given. In this way the community will be strengthened and what was once hidden, will be brought out into the open.
